I think the notion of a $35 Pi has become a bit of myth. Sure you can still get a Pi3 or a under configured Pi4 (memory wise) for that much, but not much good for desktop use.
According to the US consumer price index"The Pi was supposed to be the 35 dollar computer". Well not anymore, and that is the problem.

the buying power of $35 in 2013 is $46.62 in today's dollars. In particular, the 2GB Pi 4B is currently selling at the same price point as the original Pi B when it was first released.
Given the price of premium dog treats, Fido is convinced the inflation has been much worse. I pointed out, while the CPI is used to calculate cost of living increases for many government jobs, not that many employees eat dog treats. The howling sound is quite loud now.
