Sorry, but I'm not clear. Did you install a LITE (headless) version of the RPI OS? If so, there is no GUI for VNC to launch. You will have to use SSH.I am brand new at Raspberry Pi and really struggled to get the OS loaded and connecting (headless) to my MacBook, but it finally worked. I know the pi is connected to the internet and laptop, because I was finally able to ping it from the command line and successfully sign in on the VNC viewer using the IP address, and start a session, but it just came up with a blank gray screen
