Troubleshooting • Re: Cloning SD card with autologin enabled

Thank you for the responses.

I am using OS version 11.
I have tested both methods: raspi-config and editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf - no difference.

Bit more info:
I am using Win32DiskImager, to create an image of an existing SD card, where autologin is enabled.
I then use Raspberry PI Imager, and take that image and to write it onto a new SD card.
We have already deployed many Raspberry PI's with user pi, so I would prefer staying with user pi.

Do I need another program to be able to have autologin on cloned SD cards?

"We have already deployed many Raspberry PI's"

So I take it this comes from a background with some system administration experience. Not just a new user taking first steps.

I think the general question to be addressed is: "why is my 'clone' not an accurate copy of the original?"

This happens to be a visible difference that has come to your attention: there might be other differences you are not aware of?

Clearly you can compare the still-running original source, and the result of a fresh installation from the doubtful copy. You have found them to be different. At what stage was the difference introduced?

If this were my issue to debug I would take the image produced by Win32DiskImager to a workstation machine where I could inspect the content of the image without actually installing it.

But before doing that I would investigate whether the Raspberry Pi SD Card Copier utility gives the same or different results.

When you use the Raspberry Pi Imager utility to generate a new bootable card, do you use the 'Advanced' settings to set up user authentication, networking, etc? [Untested: I suspect that in the case of restoring a 'custom' image of your own making you should NOT do so?]
