I use an array of 7x5 3144 sensors in an application and they work well.
As the sensors have an open collector output then they can be wire-ored together to make scanning simpler. In my case I drive 7 separate power lines to groups of 5 sensors and the 5 sensors in each group are then wired in paralleled to 5 inputs making a total of 12 GPIO.
