What country are you in?

Sadly, this still really matters. Some modems that work like a champ in some countries are dismal failures in others, even if they are supposed to be certified. Or maybe it's just in Canada where cellular comms are expensive and terrible*.

SixFab make decent kit. Their 3G/4G/LTE Base HAT appears as a couple of serial ports over USB. It's a little more complicated to connect to now that Bookworm does all that fancy network management stuff, but SixFab's support is good.

*: we have a handful of carriers who absolutely couldn't possibly be colluding on prices because the head of the national government regulatory body is a former SVP of one of the carriers. Meanwhile, we pay lots for very piddly data allocations, carriers are allowed to charge roaming even in your home province, and carriers also fiddle with network parameters to make sure subscribers to other networks get sub-standard network connectivity. Welcome to my life!
